R&L
Brosamer Green Initiatives
R&L Brosamer is
committed to environmental issues. We take pride in our work
and care strongly about the environment. We have formalized
our commitment in recent years with several initiatives. Our
efforts have focused on the following key areas:
Green Initiatives
in the Main R&L Brosamer Office
 |
Recycling: RLB recycles all paper products, batteries,
plastics, printer/copier toners, used electronics, and
metals. |
 |
Conservation: Reuse packaging, envelopes, print
double-sided, turn off lights, AC, heater, and other
appliances when not in use. |
 |
Paperless: RLB invested in Explorer Contract Manager –
an accounting and project management system that will
eventually eliminate 90% of the printing and copying.
|
 |
Flexible Schedule: allows flexible work hours
which reduce commuting time, reducing congestion, and lower
emission. |
 |
Office Location: RLB recently relocated our main
office next to the Walnut Creek BART (Bay Area Rapid
Transit) Station to encourage employees to utilize public
transportation to and from work. RLB also provides free
BART tickets to some office employees to encourage use of
mass-transit. |
 |
Post-Consumer Products: Whenever possible, RLB
purchases post-consumer recycled paper, and other recycled
products. |
 |
Encourage Green-Initiative: In our latest Company
Safety Meeting in April 2009, we discussed several
green-initiatives and encourage participation in protecting
the environment. |
 |
Ride-Sharing: RLB provides shuttles and arranges carpooling
to all company events. |
 |
Charity
Work: RLB supports charity work every year.
In 2009, RLB will support a Green Charity.
We utilize
certified environmental-friendly cleaning services using
non-toxic and green detergent and cleaning solutions. |
Green Initiatives
in the Field Operations:
 |
Employee
Camp Locations:
RLB sets up campgrounds at most of our field projects so
jobsite employees can live close to work in trailers or RVs. |
 |
Hybrids
and down-sizing engines:
all field managers drive hybrid Ford Escapes. We are
also purchasing 4-cylinder vehicles for the engineering
staff, replacing 6- and 8-cylinder engines. The 4-cylinder
vehicles achieve 24 MPG versus an average of 16 MPG for the
larger engines. 20% of the total truck fleet is
downsized to 4-cylinder engines. |
 |
RLB
enrolled in the South Coast Air Quality Management District
SOON Program on October 6, 2008 to achieve early compliance
with the State off-Road Diesel Regulations. RLB replaced
manager vehicles with Ford Escape Hybrids. |
 |
RLB
implemented the No-Idling Policy prior to it becoming law. |
 |
RLB’s
involvement in the All American Canal Project helps save
132,000 acre feet of water seepage loss per year. This
not only conserves water as a resource, but also enhances
the eco system of the Colorado River. RLB was also
involved in another similar project at the Coachella Canal. |
 |
Recycling
of material at the Napa, Pittsburg, Dublin, San Jose
Airport, LAX and Truckee projects. Existing material from
these projects was re-used by crushing as a lean base (both
broken concrete and milled asphalt). These actions saved on
using new paving material plus the diesel engines required
for the trucking of the material. Approximately
200,000 tons of material were recycled and used on the same
project in the last 5 years. |
Given that
heavy machinery are a major source of pollution in heavy civil
construction, R&L Brosamer has made drastic efforts to significantly
improve our equipment carbon footprint and become a leader in
reducing emission by replacing older equipment with newer, greener
technologies.
Green Initiatives
in the Field Operations, Specifically for the LAX Project:
 |
RLB
encourages carpooling to work. |
 |
Foremen
trucks have limitation on fuel usage to reduce waste. |
 |
In
addition to the above, we also have outlined several plans
(such as optimize delivery schedules to minimize
double-handling, etc.) in our Project Sustainability and
SWPPP submittals. |
 |
RLB
implemented the No-Idling Policy prior to it becoming law. |
Agencies that have
worked with R&L Brosamer to Improve our Environmental Effort:
We have
worked closely with the following agencies and companies in the
last few years to progress our Company, transform our equipment
department, and improve our environmental knowledge:
Over the last few
years, R&L Brosamer has committed millions of dollars to invest in
green technology and environmental friendly equipment. On the
LAX Crossfield Taxiway Project, R&L Brosamer has and will spend well
over $1,000,000 just to purchase BACT and alternative energy
equipment, install filters on lower tier equipment, and utilize
plans and methods that will further reduce emission on this Project.
